Garnet color, purplish reflections. Nose of small black fruits and cocoa, which are enriched after aeration with notes of liquorice. On the palate, powerful tannins and lots of structure.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Deep garnet with ruby highlights, brilliant and sustained. A colour that reflects the density and maturity of grapes harvested at full ripeness from the rolled pebble terroir of the Gard.

Nose

Very expressive and spontaneous, dominated by notes of ripe black fruits: black cherry, blackberry, and blackcurrant. Nuances of violet (a characteristic contribution of Syrah) and a peppery spice touch complete this gourmet bouquet. Beautiful opening upon aeration.

Palate

The attack is round and ample, carried by the natural generosity of Grenache. The tannins are melted, silky, of remarkable quality for a wine without added sulphites. The finish is fresh and persistent on red fruits and spices. A fruity and spicy red wine with great drinkability.

Decant or open the bottle 1 hour before serving to fully express the natural aromas of this lively cuvée.

Terroir, Winemaking & Aging

Terroir — Rolled Pebbles, Heart of the Côtes du Rhône

From a terroir of rolled pebbles on an ancient Rhône riverbed in the Gard region, our vineyard rests on a clay-limestone soil typical of the Rhône Valley. These pebbles, accumulated over millennia, store solar heat and release it at night, promoting slow and even ripening of the grapes. The Mediterranean Mistral naturally purifies the vines, limiting diseases without any chemical intervention.

Density: 4,000 vines/ha | Yield: 45 hl/ha | Average age of vines: 25 years | Climate: Mediterranean.

Vinification — The Art of No Added Sulfites

Mechanical harvesting with parcel selection at full maturity. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the aromatic purity of the fruit.

Unfined, unfiltered, unsulfited wine. No sulfites are added at any stage — from harvesting to bottling. Aging for 12 months ensures the natural integration of tannins and the stability of the cuvée without the use of any preservatives. Alcohol: 14% vol.

Grape varieties — Élytres blend

Syrah (50%)
An emblematic grape variety of the Côtes du Rhône and a favorite of the estate, Syrah brings its spicy character, notes of violet and black fruits to the Élytres cuvée. Fine and complex, it provides structure, length, and remarkable aging potential. It is the origin of the cuvée's fruity and spicy red wine aromatic profile.

Grenache Noir (50%)
Power and generosity form the gourmand character of Grenache. Its characteristic aromas – black cherry, tobacco, chocolate, mocha, and white pepper – constitute the round and generous heart of the Élytres cuvée. In equal parity with Syrah, it creates a unique balance between spicy freshness and velvety texture.

This 50/50 blend is the exclusive signature of the sulfite-free Élytre cuvée, distinguishing it from all other cuvées of the estate.

✨ No Added Sulfites — What Does That Mean?

Cuvée Élytres — A Living Wine, With No Added Sulfites

Sulfites (SO₂) are used in winemaking as preservatives and antioxidants. The Élytre sulfite-free cuvée is made with no added sulfites at any stage — a demanding choice that requires perfect mastery from the vineyard to the cellar, and impeccable sanitary quality of the grapes.

Why this choice?

Removing sulfites means choosing to express the absolute purity of the fruit. This wine with no added sulfites is easier to digest, lighter on the palate, and expresses a lively and spontaneous character that surprises even seasoned connoisseurs. It is the purest vision of the rolled pebble terroir of Château des Coccinelles.

Storage of a sulfite-free wine

A wine with no added sulfites simply requires storage at a constant temperature (12–15°C), lying down and protected from light. Consume within 3 to 5 years. Once opened, consume within 24–48 hours. Decant for 1 hour to reveal all its aromas.

Legacy & Conviction

Château des Coccinelles — Organic Wine Pioneer since 1978

Château des Coccinelles is a pioneering organic wine: it is one of the very few French wineries to have obtained organic certification as early as 1978. Long before it became a trend, René Fabre chose to join the Nature & Progrès Association and co-draft the first organic specifications approved by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Over 45 Years of Conviction

Since 1978, this philosophy has guided every decision at the estate: zero synthetic pesticides, zero chemical fertilizers, respectful soil cultivation that preserves natural balance. The Élytres cuvée is the most radical expression of this heritage — a high-expression direct-from-producer wine from Gard, with no added sulfites, true to the deep identity of a terroir of Côtes du Rhône rolled pebbles.

Purity & Naturalness

Cuvée Élytre Sulfite-Free — Absolute Purity of the Fruit

The cuvée Élytre sans sulfites takes its name from the protective wings of the ladybug – a symbol of the biodiversity preserved since the estate's foundation. It embodies the winemaker's ultimate ambition: an organic red wine with no added sulfites, produced without any preservatives, stable thanks solely to technical mastery and the impeccable quality of the grapes.

An exceptional Rhône Valley wine

On a terroir of rolled pebbles swept by the mistral, Syrah and Grenache (50/50) ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. No sulfur, no animal fining. Matured for 12 months. The result: a fruity and spicy red wine, vibrant and easily digestible, awarded the Gold Medal at the Frankfurt Trophy 2024.

Ethics & Biodiversity

A Vegan and Organic Wine — The Ladybugs' Commitment

Château des Coccinelles (Ladybug Castle) owes its name to the ladybugs present in its vineyards – natural sentinels that regulate pests without chemical intervention. This symbol of biodiversity guides the estate's ethical commitment all the way to the cellar, where no animal products are used.

What is Vegan Wine?

A vegan red wine is made without any animal-derived additives during clarification. Where conventional wines use egg whites, gelatin, or fish glue, the Élytres cuvée relies solely on plant proteins and natural decantation. No animal products, from vine to glass – an ethical choice consistent with the organic commitment since 1978.

Purchase Organic Red Wine Sulfite-Free — Côtes du Rhône Élytres, Direct from Producer Gard

Élytres is the most demanding cuvée from Château des Coccinelles. A Syrah/Grenache blend from a Côtes du Rhône rolled pebble terroir, vinified without added sulfites or animal products — it is one of the most committed organic red wines available for purchase online from the Rhône Valley vineyard.

Its Gold Medal at the Frankfurt Trophy 2024 proves that a pioneering organic wine can achieve the highest quality standards. Available for direct purchase from the producer in Gard, in limited quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions — Cuvée Élytre, Organic Sulfite-Free Côtes du Rhône Red Wine

What is a "no added sulfites" wine like the Élytre cuvée?

Unlike conventional wines, we do not add sulfur (sulfites) during winemaking or bottling. The Cuvée Élytre sans sulfites thus expresses the absolute purity of the fruit—a fruity and spicy red wine, vibrant and naturally digestible.

It is a lively, more digestible wine that simply requires storage at a constant temperature (ideally between 12°C and 15°C). This absence of sulfur is possible thanks to the impeccable sanitary quality of the grapes from our organic viticulture since 1978, and the rigor of our work in the cellar.

Why is this Élytres wine Vegan?

A Vegan red wine means that no animal-derived fining agents (such as gelatin or egg albumin) were used for clarifying the wine. At Château des Coccinelles, we use vegetable proteins or natural decantation to uphold our ethical convictions.

This choice is consistent with our organic commitment since 1978: no animal-derived products at any stage of production, from vine to glass. The Élytres cuvée is thus a fully plant-based Rhône Valley wine, without compromising on quality.

What is the flavor profile of this Côtes du Rhône Élytres?

Elytre is a fruity and spicy red wine, luscious and intense. It offers notes of ripe dark fruits (blackberry, blueberry, black cherry) and a peppery, spicy touch typical of Syrah. Its structure is supple due to the absence of sulfur, making it very silky on the palate with melted and elegant tannins.

The blend of 50% Syrah / 50% Grenache from a Côtes du Rhône rolled pebble terroir gives it both aromatic freshness and generosity. Decant 1 hour before serving to reveal its full complexity.

What to pair with Cuvée Élytre?

This organic red wine with no added sulfites pairs perfectly with Mediterranean cuisine, grilled vegetables, braised beef, or aged cheese boards. For lovers of plant-based cuisine, it enhances a lentil curry or a mushroom risotto.

Its spicy framework (Syrah) and natural roundness (Grenache) make it an ideal partner for roasted meats as well as rich vegetarian and vegan dishes. Serve at 16–18°C, after decanting for 1 hour.

Has the estate really been organic since 1978?

Yes! Château des Coccinelles is one of the pioneers of organic farming in France. Long before it was fashionable, we chose to ban chemical pesticides to promote biodiversity, symbolized by the ladybugs that naturally protect our vines.

René Fabre joined the Nature & Progrès Association in 1974 and co-authored the first organic specifications approved by the Ministry of Agriculture. This pioneering organic wine embodies more than 45 years of constant commitment to clean, responsible, and expressive viticulture—a unique heritage in the Rhône Valley.

What is a wine with no added sulfites?

A wine with no added sulfites is a wine to which no synthetic sulfites (sulfur dioxide, SO₂) have been added by the winemaker at any stage: neither in the vineyard, during winemaking, nor during bottling. European regulations impose a maximum threshold of 10 mg/L of SO₂ to legally carry this mention on the label — a level so low that it corresponds only to sulfites naturally produced by yeasts during fermentation.

It is important to note that a wine completely free of sulfites does not exist: the fermentation of grapes inevitably produces very small quantities. The precise term is therefore "no added sulfites", which distinguishes the absence of chemical addition from the inevitable minimal and natural presence. This is precisely the approach of Château des Coccinelles' cuvée Élytres.

What does "no added sulfites" on a wine mean?

When you read "no added sulfites" or "contains less than 10 mg/L of SO₂" on a label, it means the winemaker has refrained from adding any sulfur-based preservatives to their wine, from the vineyard to the bottle. This is a demanding choice that requires perfect mastery of winemaking, as sulfites normally act as antioxidants and antimicrobials, protecting the wine against oxidation and infection.

For the consumer, this statement signals a return to authenticity: a wine that fully expresses its terroir and grape varieties without chemical masking. As an indication, an organic wine contains on average 3 times fewer sulfites than a conventional wine, and a biodynamic wine up to 10 times fewer. This label is often associated with organic wines, such as the Élytre AOC Côtes du Rhône cuvée.

What are the health effects of sulfites?

Sulfites can cause adverse reactions in sensitive individuals, varying in severity depending on the quantity consumed:

  • Respiratory symptoms: cough, difficulty breathing — asthmatics are particularly vulnerable (5 to 10% of them show intolerance that can trigger a severe attack)
  • Skin symptoms: redness, hives, itching
  • Digestive symptoms: stomach aches, nausea, diarrhea — sulfites irritate the digestive lining and can unbalance the gut microbiota
  • Headaches and migraines: dilating effect on the blood vessels of the brain
  • Neurological effects: in 2022, European experts identified evidence of harmful effects on the central nervous system
  • In extreme cases: anaphylactic shock (true allergy)

This is why choosing a wine with no added sulfites like the Élytres cuvée is a popular alternative for sensitive people who want to enjoy an organic red wine with the most natural chemical profile possible.

Why should you avoid sulfites in wine?

Avoiding added sulfites in wine is driven by three main reasons:

1. For health — Sensitive individuals (those with asthma, migraines, or digestive issues) experience a significant reduction in their symptoms with sulfite-free wines. We generally consume too many sulfites daily (also present in dried fruits, cured meats, and processed foods); choosing a wine without added sulfites reduces this overall exposure.

2. For taste quality — Without chemical preservatives, a fruity and spicy red wine like Élytres better expresses its terroir: the personality of the grape, the rolled pebble soil, and the vintage are expressed without filter or masking. The wine is more vibrant, more digestible, and more spontaneous in its aromas.

3. For ethics and the environment — Choosing a pioneering organic wine without added sulfites means supporting viticulture that minimizes chemical inputs, preserves biodiversity, and respects natural balances. Historically, before industrialization, all wines were vinified without added sulfites.
