Terroir, Winemaking and Aging

Terroir

Located in the Gard region, in the heart of the AOC Côtes du Rhône, the vineyard is rooted in a clay-limestone soil covered with rolled pebbles, inherited from an ancient Rhône riverbed. The powerful Mediterranean mistral naturally purifies the vines and promotes a slow and regular ripening of the grapes.

Planting density: 4,000 vines/ha | Controlled yield: 45 hl/ha | Average age of vines: 30 years.

Winemaking & Aging

Mechanical harvesting with plot selection, at perfect ripeness. Temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of the fruit and fine tannins.

12 months aging before bottling for beautiful aromatic expression and a harmonious structure.

Grape varieties

Grenache Noir (60%)
The power and generosity of Grenache form the gourmet base of the blend. Aromas of black cherry, tobacco, chocolate, mocha, and white pepper. Adds roundness, warmth, and velvety texture.

Syrah (30%)
An iconic grape variety of the Côtes du Rhône, Syrah brings a spicy framework, notes of violet and black fruits, as well as good aging potential.

Mourvèdre (5%)
Full-bodied and tannic, it enhances structure and complexity, contributing to the wine's aging ability.

Marselan (5%)
Thanks to its richness in polyphenols, it intensifies the color and adds an extra aromatic touch to the whole.

Service & Conservation

Serving temperature: 16-18°C to express its full aromatic complexity.

Aging potential: 5 to 7 years. This 2023 vintage, made from healthy grapes harvested at full ripeness, already offers beautiful expression and will evolve gracefully.

Decanting: Recommended 30 minutes before serving to open up the aromas and soften the palate.

Food & Wine Pairings:

  • Traditional cuisine: Provençal daube, moussaka, roast leg of lamb with thyme, grilled meats
  • Vegan cuisine: Vegetable tagine, lentil curry, stuffed mushrooms, grilled eggplant, herb-roasted vegetables

Hachette Guide 2024 - 2 Stars - Remarkable Wine

Vintage 2021 - Unavailable - Sold out due to its success

The subtle and spontaneous nose is marked by crunchy red fruits, with a garrigue (thyme, sage) background. A fresh attack, with bright fruitiness (cherry), introduces a full and generous palate, with mellow accents of liquorice and built around a perfectly integrated tannic structure. Complex and well-crafted, it should gain even more harmony after some time in the cellar.

Vintage 2019 - Unavailable - A victim of its own success

A regular in the Guide, the estate stands out with this 2019 aged in stainless steel tanks. Behind a purple robe, a slightly animal nose first reveals itself, then, after aeration, releases notes of fresh red fruits, with redcurrant at the forefront. The still firm tannins are destined to meld into a body that has enough substance and fruit. A short cellaring period is necessary.

Organic Commitment

Château des Coccinelles, organic viticulture pioneer since 1978

Château des Coccinelles is one of a very small circle of the first French wineries to obtain organic certification as early as 1978.

A history of conviction, not fashion

Driven by the desire to preserve his vines and his environment, René Fabre joined the Nature & Progrès Association in 1974. Together, they drafted one of the first organic specifications validated by the Ministry of Agriculture, making the estate a true pioneer of Organic Farming in France.

Our commitment: Zero synthetic pesticides, zero chemical fertilizers, no animal products in the cellar. Respect for the natural balance of the Gard's clay-limestone soils is at the heart of our philosophy for producing authentic, expressive, and responsible organic and vegan wines.

Château des Coccinelles — Organic and Vegan ahead of its time since 1978

At Château des Coccinelles, organic viticulture is not a fad: it has been ingrained in the estate's DNA since 1978. Our vines, averaging 30 years old, grow without pesticides or chemical fertilizers on stony clay-limestone soils typical of the Gard Rhodanien region.

This commitment naturally extends to the cellar, where we produce organic and vegan red wines without any animal-derived ingredients. Each bottle expresses a modern and responsible vision of wine: faithful to the terroir, respectful of living things, and intensely delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions — Château des Coccinelles Organic Côtes du Rhône Red

How does this Organic Côtes du Rhône Red differ from a classic Côtes du Rhône?

This organic red wine benefits from a high-quality clay-limestone soil on an ancient Rhône riverbed, with certified organic viticulture since 1978 and precise cellar work.

Controlled yields (45 hl/ha) and parcel selection allow for superior aromatic concentration and finer tannins. The blend of four grape varieties—Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Marselan—provides an additional complexity rarely found in entry-level Côtes du Rhône wines.

Its vegan certification and the estate's pioneering history make it a committed, natural, and high-quality choice.

Why a four-grape blend for this Côtes du Rhône red?

The Grenache (60%) + Syrah (30%) + Mourvèdre (5%) + Marselan (5%) blend reflects the richness of the Southern Rhône's native grape varieties.

Grenache provides roundness and fruit, Syrah structure and spice, Mourvèdre enhances aging potential, and Marselan intensifies color and complexity. This quartet creates an elegant balance of power, freshness, and indulgence, suitable for both meat dishes and spicy vegan meals.

How long can this Organic Côtes du Rhône Red be kept?

The 2023 vintage stands out for its early maturity, due to an exceptionally mild winter and spring, with healthy grapes harvested at full ripeness. The result is a balanced, expressive and delicious wine, accessible now.

Estimated aging potential: 5 to 7 years. Stored on its side, away from light in a cool place (12-15°C), it will develop secondary aromas of leather, spices and undergrowth over time.

What is a vegan wine and why is this Côtes du Rhône vegan?

A vegan wine is produced without any animal products, particularly during the clarification stage. Traditional methods use egg white, gelatin, or fish glue to remove suspended particles.

Our Organic Côtes du Rhône Red is clarified with plant-based agents (bentonite, pea proteins), guaranteeing a 100% plant-based wine from vine to glass. This ethical choice is consistent with our organic commitment since 1978: no animal products at any stage of production.

What vegan dishes would pair well with this organic red wine?

This vegan red wine pairs wonderfully with plant-based cuisine rich in umami flavors and spices: root vegetable tagine (carrots, turnips, chickpeas), full-bodied lentil curry, chili sin carne, vegetarian moussaka, portobello mushrooms stuffed with herbs and walnuts, roasted vegetables (peppers, eggplant, zucchini, sun-dried tomatoes).

Its spicy notes and supple tannins enhance dishes made with legumes and tender vegetables. Ideal serving temperature: 16-18°C.
